UTAPwiki/セミナー/宇宙物理学セミナー presenter:Ryosuke Hirai (RIKEN) Title:Birth of neutron stars in binary systems
Abstract:Neutron stars are the compact remnants of massive stars, formed dramatically in the aftermath of supernova explosions. They are known to be born with high spatial velocities called neutron star kicks, reaching velocities of a few 100 km/s. In this talk, I will discuss various interesting aspects of neutron star kicks in binary systems. First, I will present results from our study on neutron stars directly colliding with stellar companions. We propose that this could explain the origin of hyper-hypervelocity stars, pulsar planets, bumpy supernova light curves and Thorne-Zytkow objects. In the second half of my talk, I will discuss consequences of long-duration neutron star kicks, or so-called "rockets". I find that when placed in binaries, neutron star rockets alter the orbit in completely different ways to normal kicks, and could revolutionize the way we understand binary evolution.
