Title：Extreme value statistics: Basics, statistical models, and cosmology applications
Abstract：
What is the magnitude of the next big earthquake to hit Tokyo ?
and how big is the largest meteorite hitting the earth in this century ?
I introduce Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) model. Statistical models are
powerful tools in many research domains from medical science to machine
learning. Often in real-world problems, we are interested in the distribution
or the frequency of "extreme" events such as heavy snowfalls, big earthquakes,
and black-mondays, rather than in the precise distribution of daily events.
The GEV model provides us with a proper foundation based on rigorous statistics,
and can be applied to many phenomena. In astronomy, one can typically
use it to address the statistical significance of, for instance, most massive
blackholes, most luminous/massive galaxies at z=15, and extremely metal-poor
stars etc. I explain the basics of GEV and discuss a few astronomical applications.
